The bathroom is the one room where a camera is unthinkable and a pendant is often not being worn. It is also one of the most common places older Australians fall. Bathrooms combine almost every fall risk in one small space. Floors and feet are wet, surfaces are hard tile and porcelain, and there is little soft furniture to break a fall. People step over bath edges, balance on one leg to dress and undress, and stand up quickly from the toilet, which can cause dizziness for anyone on blood pressure medication.

Many bathroom falls happen at night. Waking for the toilet means walking half-asleep through a dark house, often without shoes or a walking aid, and older people commonly make that trip more than once a night. A fall on the way to or inside the bathroom at 2am may not be discovered until morning.

Why cameras and pendants both fail in the bathroom
